Ilulissat
Air Greenland welcomes you to Ilulissat
Ilulissat is the Greenlandic word for Iceberg and you’ll see why, already under the flight approach. Enormous, chalk-white icebergs as far as the eye can see. The town is Greenland’s third largest with more than 4,000 inhabitants. Its main industry is year-round fishing for Greenland halibut and “Greenland’s red gold”- shrimp. In the summer it is light 24 hours a day because the town is situated 400 km north of the Arctic Circle and the concept of time is almost non-existent. By the harbour and the old church there are some beautiful buildings from 1700 and 1800 and close to the church you will also find one of the town’s museum buildings with a permanent exhibition about Knud Rasmussen, the polar explorer who was born and grew up here.Ice, ice and more ice
At the head of the fjord, about 40 km from the town, one of the most productive glaciers in the northern hemisphere calves. The fjord is filled with icebergs and it says something of their size, when you hear that at the mouth of the fjord outside town they run aground on banks that are under 2-300 metres of water. The ice fjord at Ilulissat is Greenland’s version of the Pyramids or Taj Mahal, and the area is protected and listed as one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
Fly, sail or walk to the ice
Fly with one of our fast, comfortable helicopters to the edge of the inland ice. Enjoy the silence which is only broken by the thunder of ice breaking off and toppling down; prepare yourself for the trip back, when you fly low amid icebergs. Or take a boat trip to the mouth of the fjord on a summer evening at midnight, when the sun is low, bathing the icebergs in a golden, almost magical glow. You could also just walk to the icebergs. Walk through the Sermermiut Valley where signs have been found of settlements dating back many thousands of years, and go down to the beach. There is a well-developed system of trails, so you won’t get lost.
Jump on a dog sled – an authentic experience
In North Greenland in winter the dog sled is the most important implement used by fishermen and hunters and this is how it has been for hundreds of years. Go on a dog sled trip to the fishing grounds where Greenland halibut are pulled up by hand from a depth of 500 metres, or you could just take a short trip close to town. Dressed in warm seal skin clothing, with 10 eager dogs in front of you and an experienced driver behind you, all you have to do is enjoy yourself as you speed across the ice.
