Ittoqqortoormiit

Ittoqqortoormiit

You are really far away from everything here – high to the north on the east coast at the edge of Greenland’s national park where not many people drop in. The town was founded in the 1920’s and is therefore one of Greenland’s youngest towns. The population is only 550 and the most important industry is traditional hunting for seal, whales, musk-oxen and, to some extent, polar bears. As a visitor, you will get very close to the traditional way of life in Greenland.

The town is situated at the mouth of the world’s largest fjord system with great opportunities to experience the splendid nature and scenery. In the summer, the local tourist office arranges tours, both on foot and in kayaks or boats. As the number of visitors to the town is quite small you have a unique opportunity to get into the pioneering spirit. In the winter, and in the spring until May/June, all transport is by dog sled and snow scooter and a trip with a hunter to the edge of the ice is an adventure you will not find anywhere else in Greenland. Activities range from trips taking a few hours to trips lasting several days, spending the nights in a tent or hunting cabin.
